Funeral Element Recommendations for Fire Department Personnel

The table below is a guide for Fire Chiefs to help plan a funeral and/or visitation for a department member or retiree. The elements shown for each personnel "type" are recommendations from the Cermonies and Protocols Group; however, the choice of which elements to include or exclude will depend on several factors, including cost, available personnel and resources, and personal preference, among others.

Special consideration should be given to the elements that are exclusive to Type I events, in order to preserve the honor and distinguished nature of a line-of-duty death. Elements highlighted in yellow are strongly recommended for LODD funerals. If these elements are cost-prohibitive, or appropriate resources are not available, please visit the resources page to find organizations that can assist you, or contact a C/P board member.
